Sweet Orange (Citrus Sinensis)
Description
The sweet orange tree is smaller than the bitter orange and has dark green, shiny leaves, and fewer or no spines. The fruit itself has a sweet pulp with no bitter membrane.
The essential oil is expressed from the peel of the nearly ripe fruit. Orange oil is also known as the “smiley oil” and is joyful and warming.
The monoterpene “limonene”, the major chemical constituent in essential oil, is largely used in alimentary items, and cleaning products, and it is one of the most frequent fragrances used in cosmetics formulation.
The therapeutic effects of limonene have been extensively studied, proving anti-inflammatory, antioxidant, antinociceptive, anticancer, antidiabetic, antihyperalgesic, antiviral, and gastroprotective effects, among other beneficial effects in health.
